300 years of history and innovation

Our story begins in 1690 when John Freame and Thomas Gould started trading as goldsmith bankers in Lombard Street, London. In 1736 John’s son-in-law, James Barclay, joined the business giving it the name we know today. Since then, Barclays has been a leader in innovation; funding the world’s first industrial steam railway, naming the UK’s first female branch manager and introducing the world’s first ATM machine. And those are just a few highlights from our first 300 years.

Today, Barclays is a major global financial services provider engaged in retail banking, credit cards, corporate and investment banking and wealth management with an extensive international presence in Europe, the Americas and Africa and Asia. Barclays operates in over 50 countries and employs over 140,000 people. Barclays moves, lends, invests and protects money for 48 million customers and clients worldwide.

Our community: our most important investment

Our community service is focused on helping people build life skills. How do we do it? By mentoring, teaching, and most importantly, caring.

Our Online Banking business is headquartered in Wilmington, DE, where each year colleagues:

  • Log more than 30,000 volunteer hours
  • Send 300+ mentors to an award winning local program that serves the most economically and social at-risk children in the area.
  • Host 1000 children, on-site, to give them a glimpse into the lives of working professionals and teach them about saving money and setting goals.

Additionally, colleague fundraising efforts are matched. That results in nearly $500,000 in additional contributions to charities and causes each year.

We are determined to leave things better than we find them; always working to improve the way we operate as an organization and the impact we have on society.

Where we live says a lot about who we are

Our Online Banking business is located in Wilmington, Delaware; also home to the US division of Barclaycard, the credit card and payment group of Barclays.

We chose this location because we loved the city’s thriving riverfront section and we had the unique opportunity to renovate an existing historic property as well as develop a new site. We’re proud that our campus can help contribute to the community’s growth.  

Additionally, our Barclays Wealth unit is based in New York City, and our Barclays Capital corporate finance business operates in more than a dozen U.S. cities.
